The status of the Green Capital of Europe is awarded annually to the cities leading in environmental indicators. Lahti is the smallest and the northernmost city that has received the Green Capital status. It is Finland's leading environmental protection city. In Lahti 99% of household waste is recycled, and in 2025 Lahti will be 10 years ahead of other Finnish cities that strive to be carbon neutral.

Elina Ojala, the Environmental Director of the City of Lahti, tells about Lahti's path to the Green Capital of Europe, the city's achievements in sustainable development and its ambitious goals for the future.

Elina Ojala holds a degree of Master of Science (Tech.) in Environmental Engineering and has spesialized in Water Resources Management. Before joining the City of Lahti she worked at the Finnish Ministry of agriculture and forestry, at an electricity company and at a regional environmental adminstration.

The event will be moderated by Sani Kontula-Webb, Director of the Finnish Institute in St. Petersburg.
